Microsoft 365 does not back up your data

There is a widespread assumption that data living in the cloud, in Microsoft 365 in particular, no longer needs to be backed up. Moving to Microsoft 365 does remove some risks: hardware failure, fire, flood, and the other hazards of a server room. But it does not remove the risk of losing the data itself.

Microsoft is clear about this. Its own services agreement recommends that customers regularly back up the content and data they store on the service, using third-party applications. Microsoft secures the platform; protecting what you put on it is a shared responsibility.

Accidental deletion, malicious corruption, ransomware, and retention requirements do not disappear because email and files now live in the cloud. Sector after sector has learned the hard way that a significant share of organisations have lost data in cloud services, and that many cannot fully recover it.

What has changed

Menshen has offered managed Microsoft 365 backup for some time. As of March 2026, the service is now available on Veeam, a leading enterprise backup platform, giving customers a robust, widely-trusted engine for protecting their Microsoft 365 data.

The managed service protects the Microsoft 365 workloads organisations depend on:

  • Exchange Online (email)
  • SharePoint Online
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Microsoft Teams

It follows backup best practice (the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two types of media, one offsite), with automated, continuous protection and no infrastructure for the customer to buy or run.

Two ways to consume it

  • Fully managed by Menshen. We run the backups and monitor them, and you are involved only when you need to recover something.
  • Customer-managed. You operate the platform yourself, with Menshen providing the licensing.

Either way, there is no upfront capital investment and no specialised staff to hire, just continuous protection for the data your organisation runs on.
